Why Financial Peace Starts Before the Budget Spreadsheet
When people sit down with me for financial coaching, the first thing I tell them is this: your budget is not your problem. Your relationship with money is your problem — and until we address that, no spreadsheet will save you.
I have walked hundreds of individuals and families through the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace curriculum. What I have learned, time and again, is that the technical knowledge is the easy part. Most people know they should not spend more than they earn. Most people understand the concept of an emergency fund. What stops people is not information — it is the emotional, spiritual, and relational weight that money carries.
Money Is Moral, Spiritual, and Emotional
In faith communities especially, money carries layers of meaning that go far beyond numbers. There is shame around debt. There is fear around scarcity. There is confusion about what Biblical stewardship actually looks like in a modern financial landscape. These are not problems a budget app can solve. They require conversation, honesty, and often, a guide who understands both the financial principles and the human underneath them.
That is where I begin every coaching engagement — not with numbers, but with story. What is your earliest memory of money? What did your parents model? What does security feel like, and what does its absence feel like? These questions unlock the mindset work that makes the technical work actually stick.
